U/UTP (Unscreened Unshielded Twisted Pair)

What is U/UTP?

U/UTP (Unscreened Unshielded Twisted Pair) is the most common type of Ethernet cable used worldwide.

The designation indicates:

  • No overall screen (U) surrounding the cable.
  • No shielding on individual pairs (UTP).

Instead of relying on metallic shielding, U/UTP cables use carefully controlled twist rates within each pair to minimise interference and maintain signal integrity.

U/UTP is widely used in homes, offices, schools, retail environments, and general commercial installations due to its low cost, flexibility, and ease of installation.

Twisted Pairs

  • Four twisted copper pairs.

How U/UTP Reduces Interference

Twisted Pair Design

Each pair is twisted at a different rate.

This helps:

  • Reduce electromagnetic coupling.
  • Minimise pair-to-pair crosstalk.
  • Improve signal integrity.

Balanced Transmission

Ethernet uses balanced signalling across each pair.

External interference tends to affect both conductors equally, allowing network equipment to reject much of the unwanted noise.
